Inside the Tower of Joy, Bran sees the young Eddard Stark find his sister Lyanna hemorrhaging from childbirth. With her dying breath, Lyanna pleads with Eddard to take care of her son, keeping his secret safe lest Robert kill him.

LYANNA: Ned?
NED: Lyanna.
LYANNA: Is that you? Is that really you? You’re not a dream?
NED: No, I’m not a dream. I’m here. Right here.
LYANNA: I’ve missed you, big brother.
NED: I’ve missed you, too.
LYANNA: I want to be brave.
NED: Shh. You are.
LYANNA: I’m not. I don’t want to die.
NED: You’re not going to die. Get her some water.
LYANNA: No, no water.
NED: Is there a maester?
LYANNA: Listen to me, Ned.
(whispering)
LYANNA: If Robert finds out, he’ll– you know he will.

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 10 The Winds of Winter

As Bran, Meera, and Benjen near the Wall, Benjen takes his leave, stating that the Wall’s magical protection prevents the dead from being able to pass. Meera assists Bran to a weirwood tree and he re-enters the memory of Ned Stark at the Tower of Joy.

BENJEN: This is where I leave you.
MEERA: You’re not coming with us?
BENJEN: The Wall is not just ice and stone. Ancient spells were carved into its foundations. Strong magic to protect men from what lies beyond. And while it stands, the dead cannot pass. I cannot pass.
MEERA: Where will you go?
BENJEN: The great war is coming and I still fight for the living. I’ll do what I can as long as I can.
BRAN: Thank you, Uncle Benjen.
BENJEN: I wish you both good fortune.

Game of Thrones: Benjen Stark is Coldhands

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 06 Blood of My Blood

Bran awakens to find the rider is his uncle, Benjen Stark, who had gone missing beyond the Wall. Benjen explains that he was stabbed by a White Walker during a ranging and was left to die, but was saved by the Children of the Forest by being impaled with dragonglass. He tells Bran that he needs to become the Three-Eyed Raven and control his warging before the Night King comes south.

BRAN: Who are you? Uncle Benjen. The last letter Jon wrote me said you had been lost beyond the Wall.
BENJEN: I led a ranging party deep into the North to find white walkers. They found us. A white walker stabbed me in the gut with a sword of ice. Left me there to die. To turn. The Children found me. Stopped the walker’s magic from taking hold.
BRAN: How?
BENJEN: The same way they made the walkers in the first place. You saw it yourself.
BRAN: Dragonglass. A shard of dragonglass plunged into your heart.
BENJEN: You are the Three-Eyed Raven now.
BRAN: I didn’t have time to learn. I can’t control anything.
BENJEN: You must learn to control it before the Night King comes. Drink. One way or another, he will find his way to the world of men. When he does, you will be there waiting for him. And you will be ready.

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 06 Blood of My Blood

Bran and Meera are fleeing the wights, who continue to follow them from the cave. As the wights close in, a black-clad rider appears and destroys some of the wights while pulling Meera and Bran onto his horse allowing them to escape.

BRAN: Meera. They found us.
MEERA: I’m so sorry.
