Missandei tells the masters that Daenerys has ordered one of them die as punishment for their crimes. They offer Yezzan, as he is lowborn, but Grey Worm kills the other two masters instead, and Tyrion orders Yezzan to tell the other masters back home of Daenerys’ mercy.

TYRION: Thank you for the armada. Our queen does love ships. Now, last time we spoke, we made a pact. You violated that pact. You declared war upon us. Though our queen does have a forgiving nature, this cannot be forgiven.
MISSANDEI: Our queen insists that one of you must die as punishment for your crimes.
TYRION: It always seems a bit abstract, doesn’t it, other people dying?
RAZDAL: Him. He should die.
BELICHO: Yes, him. He’s not one of us. He’s an outsider, a lowborn. He does not speak for us.
YEZZAN: Please. Please.
TYRION: Tell your people what happened here. Tell them you live by the grace of Her Majesty. When they come forward with notions of retribution or ideas about returning the slave cities to their former glory, remind them what happened when Daenerys Stormborn and her dragons came to Meereen.

Game of Thrones: Daenerys confronts the Masters

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 09 Battle of the Bastards

Daenerys and Tyrion discuss a plan to deal with the slaver fleet. Daenerys wants to slaughter their army and exterminate the populace of Yunkai, Astapor, and Volantis, but Tyrion tells her of Aerys Targaryen’s similar plan to destroy King’s Landing during the Lannister siege, and suggests talking to the masters and offering them terms of surrender.

DAENERYS: I will crucify the Masters. I will set their fleets afire, kill every last one of their soldiers, and return their cities to the dirt. That is my plan. You don’t approve?
TYRION: You once told me you knew what your father was. Did you know his plans for King’s Landing when the Lannister armies were at his gates? Probably not. Well, he told my brother and Jaime told me. He had caches of wildfire hidden under the Red Keep, the Guildhalls, the Sept of Baelor, all the major thoroughfares. He would have burned every one of his citizens. The loyal ones and the traitors. Every man, woman, and child. That’s why Jaime killed him.
DAENERYS: This is entirely different.
TYRION: You’re talking about destroying cities. It’s not entirely different. I’d like to suggest an alternate approach.

Daenerys, Tyrion, Missandei and Grey Worm meet with the masters, who tell Daenerys that they will let her and Tyrion leave the city if they hand over the Unsullied and Missandei, and kill her dragons. She counters that the meeting was to discuss their surrender, not hers, and says her reign “has just begun”.

RAZDAL: Once before, I offered you peace. If you had not been so arrogant, you could have returned to your homeland with a fleet of ships. Instead, you will flee Slaver’s Bay on foot like the beggar queen you are.
TYRION: We are here to discuss terms of surrender, not to trade insults.

YEZZAN: The terms are simple. You and your foreign friends will abandon the Great Pyramid and the city of Meereen. The Unsullied you stole from Kraznys mo Nakloz will remain to be sold again to the highest bidder. The translator you stole from Kraznys mo Nakloz will remain to be sold again to the highest bidder. The dragons beneath the Great Pyramid will be slaughtered.
DAENERYS: We obviously didn’t communicate clearly. We’re here to discuss your surrender, not mine.

RAZDAL: I imagine it’s difficult adjusting to the new reality. Your reign is over.
DAENERYS: My reign has just begun.

Game of Thrones: The Queen of Dragons returns

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 08 No One

As the Masters’ fleet bombards Meereen into the night, Tyrion and Grey Worm discuss their strategy when Daenerys returns to the city, arriving at the top of the Great Pyramid with Drogon.

TYRION: I was wrong. I admit it.
GREY WORM: That changes nothing.
TYRION: The Unsullied could mount a defense off the beachhead. If the slavers’ forces–
GREY WORM: No more talking from you. Your talking gave us this.
TYRION: And I have acknowledged that. I’m trying–
GREY WORM: You’re trying to tell me what the army should do. You do not know what the army should do.
TYRION: All right, what should the army do?
GREY WORM: We’ll not go to the beach. If we go to the beach, the Masters will take the pyramid. The pyramid is the only place in the city we can defend. We stay here.
TYRION: And then?
GREY WORM: We wait for them to come to us. Then we fight them.

Game of Thrones: Varys leaves, the Masters attack

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 08 No One

With the Red Priests on their side and spreading pro-Daenerys propaganda, Tyrion and Varys see Meereen returning to life. After warning Tyrion not to trust the Red Priests, Varys leaves for Westeros to find more allies and ships.

TYRION: I’m going to miss you.
VARYS: I know.
TYRION: I hope you’re right about this expedition of yours.
VARYS: If I don’t return, you’ll know I was wrong. We need friends in Westeros. And we need ships.
TYRION: Most of all, we need our queen.
VARYS: She’ll come back. She has to. My heart’s been broken too many times already. I’ll walk the rest of the way myself. I can’t go off on a secret mission in the company of the most famous dwarf in the city.
TYRION: Varys. The most famous dwarf in the world.

Tyrion then has a drink with Grey Worm  and Missandei. He then tries to introduce them to humor by trading jokes. As they start having a good time, they are interrupted when a fleet sent by the Masters arrives to attack the city, with Missandei explaining that they come to recover their “property.”

MISSANDEI: The Masters have come for their property.

Game of Thrones: In Meereen

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 04 Book of the Stranger

Despite Grey Worm and Missandei’s objections, Tyrion arranges a diplomatic meeting with the masters of Slaver’s Bay. He proposes a deal allowing all cities except Meereen seven years to transition away from slavery, while the masters are compensated for any losses. In return, the masters will cease their support of the Sons of the Harpy. As the masters deliberate, Tyrion is confronted by the former slaves of Meereen, who oppose any kind of negotiation with the masters. Grey Worm and Missandei reluctantly support Tyrion, but in private they warn him that the masters, whom they are both familiar with, will use him if he tries to use them.

GREY WORM: You invite the enemy into our city?
TYRION: I did. As a clever man once told me “We make peace with our enemies, not our friends.”
GREY WORM: I don’t make peace with the queen’s enemies. I kill the queen’s enemies.
TYRION: Yes, that’s the military approach. And how has that worked here in Meereen? I represent the diplomatic approach.
MISSANDEI: Our queen tried to make peace with the Masters and they tried to murder her.
TYRION: We enter these negotiations with open eyes. Trust me.

TYRION: I imagine this room was built so the rulers could intimidate the ruled. But I am not your ruler. I’m not the Breaker of Chains. I’m not the Unburnt. And I am certainly not the Mother of Dragons.
MAN: You are a stranger here. So why do you represent Meereen in these talks with our enemies?
TYRION: Because our queen chose me as her advisor. Until she returns from her travels–
MAN: When does she return?
TYRION: Soon. You have my word.
MAN: We don’t know you. We don’t trust you. We know Torgo Nudho. We fight with him against the Masters. We trust him.
TYRION: And that is exactly why Grey Worm took part in these negotiations. As commander of the Unsullied, he knows how to defeat the slavers and he knows when it is time to make peace.
MAN: You have made peace with the slavers?
TYRION: We offered terms.

Game of Thrones: In Meereen

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 03 Oathbreaker

Varys summons Vala, a woman allied with the Sons of the Harpy. He accuses her of conspiring to kill the Unsullied and Second Sons, but offers her safe passage to Pentos with a bag of silver for information about who funds the Sons of the Harpy.

VALA: If I tell you anything, they’ll kill me. So either you kill me or they do.
VARYS: Yes, from your perspective, this is a problem. There is a third option, though. A ship leaving tomorrow for Pentos. I’ve already booked passage for a woman and her young son. I’ll even throw in a bag of silver to help you start again. Though I’m afraid we’ll have to ask one of our leather-clad friends back in to carry it. Far too heavy for me. The boat sails at dawn. You need to decide now. A new life for you and Dom or…

Tyrion tries to entertain Grey Worm and Missandei while waiting for Varys. Varys arrives and explains that he has discovered that the slave masters of Yunkai, Astapor, and Volantis have been financing the Sons of the Harpy.

TYRION: Oh, you took your time.
VARYS: Sorry. I was busy learning who funds the Sons of the Harpy. Some things you can’t rush.
MISSANDEI: You found out?
VARYS: The Good Masters of Astapor and the Wise Masters of Yunkai. With help from their friends in Volantis.

Game of Thrones: Tyrion and Varys

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 02 Home

With little good news in Meereen, as Daenerys is still missing and following the most recent attack by the Sons of the Harpy in the harbour, Tyrion converses with Varys, Missandei, and Grey Worm. Tyrion learns that Astapor and Yunkai have been retaken by the Masters, leaving Meereen as the only free city in Slaver’s Bay.

TYRION: If I lost my cock, I’d drink all the time. Meaning no offense. He makes dwarf jokes, I make eunuch jokes.
VARYS: I do not make dwarf jokes.
TYRION: You think them.
